About
Welcome to the Lockup Doc blog!
I am a board-certified psychiatrist (M.D.) in my 40’s. I completed an internship in internal medicine, a residency in psychiatry, and a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry. I spend about half of my professional time working in correctional settings, providing psychiatric treatment to inmates. I spend the other half treating children and adults with developmental disabilities. In addition to doing hands-on clinical work, I have a volunteer clinical assistant professor position with a department of psychiatry and do some teaching of medical students and residents.
Unfortunately some people look down on professionals who work in corrections. I believe this is unfortunate. Some of us, such as myself, work in corrections by choice. I enjoy what I do! I could just as easily have a private practice, be on the academic track, or whatever. Corrections and people with developmental disabilities need more good docs who get excited about their work!
I started this blog both to educate and entertain people about issues in correctional psychiatry and also to serve as a means of self-expression and creativity. Writing here helps me to stay more engaged with what I do professionally. I find that I read more and give more thought to professional issues.
I hope you enjoy reading this blog, and I sincerely thank you for stopping by! Please feel free to send me ideas for topics you would like to read about.
