Welcome to the Lockup Doc blog!
I am a psychiatrist (M.D.) in my 40′s. I am certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and I’ve been in practice for about 11 years. I completed an internship in internal medicine, a residency in psychiatry, and a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry. I spend about half of my professional time working in correctional settings, providing psychiatric treatment to inmates. I spend the other half treating children and adults with developmental disabilities. I have experience in community psychiatry as well as in a traditional group practice involving outpatient/inpatient settings. In addition to doing hands-on clinical work, I have a volunteer clinical assistant professor position with a department of psychiatry and do some teaching of medical students and residents.
Why the name, “Lockup Doc”?
When I started blogging, I wanted to come up with a descriptive pen name. I’ve always thought that these made other medical bloggers seem more interesting. There’s no deep or hidden meaning to it. And it doesn’t mean anything negative. It’s simply a fact that I spend part of my time working with people who are “locked up.” “Lockup Doc” sounded more interesting to me than “Correctional Psychiatrist” or “Prison Shrink” or something else like that. I don’t lock people up myself or enjoy seeing people get locked up. I just treat them. The only downsides I see to this name are that it might inadvertently scare off potential readers who see the name and make negative assumptions about it (and about me). It’s also a bit limiting–working with inmates is only part of what I do. I work in other settings, too, and I enjoy those other aspects of psychiatry just as much as the prison work.
I started this blog to raise awareness, to generate discussion, and to decrease stigma about various mental health and medical issues. It also serves as a means of self-expression and creativity. Writing here helps me to stay more engaged with what I do professionally. I find that I read more and give more thought to professional issues.
I hope you enjoy reading this blog, and I sincerely thank you for stopping by! Please feel free to send me ideas for topics you would like to read about.
